Wig Install Aftercare: First 48 Hours and Week-by-Week Care image

The most important rule after a wig install is simple: keep the hairline dry and calm for the first 48 hours. That means no washing, no steamy showers, and no heavy sweating that can soften adhesive before it finishes setting. I do wig installs in Dover (60 minutes, starting at $80), and the people who get the longest wear are the ones who protect the hairline early.

First 24 to 48 hours: the do-not-touch window that saves your install

Think of the first two days as the “set it and protect it” window. If you treat your lace front wig install gently right away, you usually avoid the early lifting that makes people feel like they need a fix almost immediately.

Quick rule: Keep water, steam, and sweat off the hairline for 48 hours, and skip oils or edge products near the adhesive.

What I want you doing right away

  • Keep showers quick and avoid direct spray on the hairline. If you need to shower, aim the water away and keep the bathroom as cool as you can.
  • Sleep with protection. A silk or satin cap helps, and a silk pillowcase is your backup if the cap slips.
  • Tie hair down loosely. A low ponytail or a single loose braid reduces friction without pulling at the front.
  • Keep hands off the lace. Picking, pressing, or re-positioning the hairline early can weaken the bond and make the lace look less natural.

What to avoid (even if it feels “small”)

Skip heavy workouts, saunas, hot yoga, or anything that makes you sweat hard. Dover summers along the Mid-Atlantic can be hot and humid, and humidity alone can challenge an install if you add sweat on top of it. If you have shift work or you’re rushing between responsibilities, keep it basic: stay cool, keep the hairline dry, and protect it while you sleep.

Days 3 to 7: keep it neat, and avoid the “Dover humidity” mistakes

Once you’re past the first 48 hours, you can live your life again, just a little smarter. Wind and humidity on the North Dupont Highway corridor can sneak up on you, and the first week is when people accidentally loosen their install lace wig without realizing it.

Windy days

If it’s windy, keep a scarf handy, but don’t tie it tight at the hairline. Tight pressure can cause rubbing right where you want the lace to stay flat.

Steam and heat

Try not to stand in a hot shower forever, and be careful with steam around the front. Heat and moisture together are what soften a bond fastest.

Tight hats and helmet-style pressure

For the first week, avoid tight hats that grip the hairline. If you have to wear one, pick something looser and limit the time.

If you notice a tiny lift at a corner, don’t start pressing products into it at home. That usually makes the area messy and harder to clean up later. Just reach out, and I’ll tell you the safest next step.

Week-by-week care: washing, products, and the hairline rules that matter

I usually recommend waiting 1 to 2 weeks before your first gentle wash. People rush this part, and it’s one of the fastest ways to break down an installing frontal wig result.

Your first wash (around week 1 to 2)

  • Use a sulfate-free, low-residue shampoo and keep product off the adhesive area as much as possible.
  • Don’t scrub the hairline. Use gentle strokes and let the shampoo do the work.
  • Avoid heavy oils right at the hairline. Oils can break down bonds faster than most people expect.

Weekly habits that keep it looking fresh

Keep your routine simple and consistent. Wrap at night, keep friction low, and don’t overload the base with products. Cooler, drier fall weather in our area often helps installs last longer, but dry air can also make hair look dull if you skip light moisture on the lengths. Moisturize the hair, not the adhesive.

When I want to see you back: 1 to 3 weeks for a check, 4 to 8 weeks for maintenance

If you’re wearing your wig daily, a follow-up check in 1 to 3 weeks is the sweet spot. I can check tension, clean up any early lift, and keep the install looking natural without you feeling like you have to start over. After that, most people do regular maintenance every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on lifestyle.

Reach out sooner if you feel pinching, you see lifting that’s spreading, you’re getting itching that doesn’t calm down, or you had an unexpected soaking (rain happens). If you’re in Dover, Camden, Wyoming, Smyrna, Frederica, or Magnolia, I can usually get you in for a quick check so you’re not stressing.

Quick checklist for busy schedules (students, commuters, and shift work)

If your week is packed, keep aftercare down to what actually moves the needle. This matters a lot around university schedules and race-day weekends when you’re running nonstop.

  • First 48 hours: keep the hairline dry, keep sweat low, sleep with silk.
  • First week: avoid steam and tight hats, don’t pick at the lace.
  • Week 1 to 2: do your first gentle wash with sulfate-free, low-residue products.
  • Week 1 to 3: schedule a check if anything feels off instead of trying to “fix” it at home.
